I've just revised my book "How to Choose a Georgia DUI Lawyer" and its now ready for the second printing! In celebration, I thought I'd excerpt a few passages for this blog. Remember, if you'd like your own copy, just call (770) 338-2338 and I'll be happy to send you a copy.

Here is another good question you should ask a lawyer whom you are considering hiring: "Are you a former prosecutor and, if so, where were you a prosecutor?"

"Working in a prosecutor's office is invaluable experience for a DUI lawyer. Not only does it mean the lawyer has trial experience, it also means the lawyer knows exactly what tools a current prosecutor has at his or her disposal.  Who better to have defending you? If a lawyer does not prominently advertise his former prosecutor status, it's probably because he never worked as a prosecutor.

It is also important to ask your potential lawyer where they were a prosecutor.  All prosecutor jobs are not created equal.  Some prosecutor's jobs are only part time, some prosecutors don't handle any felony matters at all, and some prosecutor's offices are just not very busy.

I am a former Gwinnett County Assistant Solicitor (In Georgia, the prosecutors who represent the government in DUI cases and misdemeanors are referred to as Solicitors and not 'district attorneys.'  The district attorneys or 'D.A.s' you see on TV shows are doing the exact same job as a Solicitor or Solicitor-General).

Gwinnett County is one of the busiest prosecutor's offices in the state.  When I was considering a job offer to join the Gwinnett County Solicitor's office, I was told 'A year in Gwinnett County is equivalent to three years in a district attorney's office in terms of trial experience.' In my five years as a prosecutor, I had over 60 jury trials and hundreds of non-jury trials; much more trial experience than most lawyers have in their entire careers-and this was just the beginning of my 19 years' experience as a trial lawyer.
