Georgia's Super Speeder Law in detailAs of January 1, speeding ticket fines will rise dramatically. That is when the new "Super Speeder" law goes into effect bringing with it fines of an extra $200 per ticket for those drivers caught going 85 mph or more on the highway. On two lane roads, the extra fines start at only 75 mph. These fines are on top of what the local ticket already costs. Ticket fines vary throughout the state because they are set by local jurisdictions, but are usually at least $100. The extra $200 is a state imposed fine and in theory is earmarked for trauma services, but just exactly what the money will be used for has yet to be decided by the Georgia legislature. A recent study does indeed back up the widely held belief that traffic tickets save lives. Receiving a traffic ticket reduces a driver's risk of dying in an accident by 35% in the weeks after receiving the ticket simply because drivers remember receiving a ticket and what they did to earn it. Oddly enough for a state that hands out such expensive speeding tickets, Georgia does try to protect its speeders from excessive insurance charges. Georgia does not report tickets to insurance companies where the driver is going less than 14 mph over the speed limit, and by law doesn't allow insurance companies to assign points for tickets given for going 14 mph over or less. Georgia sets the points insurance companies are allowed to give, which are: 15 mph - 18 mph over the limit: 2 points For many drivers, insurance rates will not go up at all for their first ticket (rates do vary by company, so check with yours), but I'm sure you'll want to avoid getting a ticket in the first place. I give tips on how to do just that in my blog "How not to get a traffic ticket." If you have a serious traffic charge, contact Jessica Towne.
