What are drug courts? Are there drug courts in the Atlanta area?Many courts have DUI and Drug Courts. Drug Courts are generally voluntary and reserved for people charged with felony drug possession where no weapons or no violence is involved. DUI Courts are mandatory in some Georgia counties for drivers with a prior DUI conviction. In DUI court, a driver is required to enter a guilty plea to DUI and another offense (like speeding) and then must complete a DUI Court program as a condition of probation. For those without a prior drug conviction, prosecutors and judges dismiss the cases of those who successfully complete a Drug Court program. For those with prior DUI convictions, the DUI is not dismissed, even with successful completion of the DUI Court program. The program costs about $3,000 and takes 18-36 months to complete.
